There’s great Thai food in Kearney, Nebraska – who knew? On the way to Denver, Colorado this October, our planned stop for the night was Kearney, Nebraska. I was tired and hungry, and would settle for just about anything, so I asked my travel companion Eliza to choose a dinner destination. When she said she was in the mood for Thai food, I said, “well OK, but do you think you can find that in the middle of Nebraska?” As it turned out, she did, and we were both impressed by Suwannee Thai Cuisine.

Suwannee Thai Cuisine is located in an unassuming strip mall near downtown Kearney. The exterior windows were blacked out with curtains, so we weren’t sure at first whether it was even open. However, when we went inside, we found it to be a well decorated, cozy yet spacious restaurant with friendly staff and a comprehensive menu. They offered the usual Thai fare, plus some special items such as a dish served in a pineapple. Since we were new to the restaurant, we opted for familiar fare, starting off with crab wontons and spring rolls, both of which were excellent. I was pleased that the wontons had lots of crab in them, as many restaurants make them with mostly cream cheese. I’m often neutral on spring rolls, but Suwannee’s had great flavor. For our entrées, I ordered pad see yoo and my friend got red curry. The sauce on my pad see yoo was incredibly flavorful and fulfilling; Eliza enjoyed the taste of her red curry, but said that the portion was too small.

The restaurant servers were extremely friendly and helpful. They turned out to be local college students, and we enjoyed chatting with them about their town and found out about some fun things to do in the area. Service was speedy and prices were reasonable for a nice dinner.

Wheelchair Access

The restaurant is wheelchair accessible and has convenient accessible parking near the door. I did not attempt to use the restroom, so I can’t comments on whether or not it is accessible.

Service Dogs

Aria the service dog was welcomed and treated appropriately by the staff. The restaurant ambience is calm and quiet.

Overall, we were pleasantly surprised by the quality of the food, the service was excellent, and we would not hesitate to return again. If you’re traveling through Kearney, Nebraska, don’t miss this gem of a restaurant, Suwannee Thai Cuisine.
