My name is Karin Willison, and I have cerebral palsy. I use a wheelchair, but I don’t let my disability limit me. I am determined to live a full and exciting life, and surround myself with wonderful experiences and people.
Writer and Blogger
I have a BA in English from Stanford University and MA in Psychology from Antioch University. I've spent my career as an editor, writer, web designer, PR and marketing professional for various individuals and companies, primarily in the disability and/or arts fields. I'm currently Disability Editor at The Mighty, a popular website where people share their personal experiences with disability, disease, and mental illness.
I'm always looking for freelance writing opportunities, both paid and unpaid depending on the circumstances. I'm interested in working as a brand representative or influencer for disability and/or travel-related products and services via writing, public appearances, videos, product testing and more.
I'm fortunate that cerebral palsy does not affect my speech or ability to communicate. I've been doing public speaking since I was 12 years old, and have given presentations for businesses, nonprofit organizations, service clubs, conferences, and schools from elementary to university level. I can present on topics including: growing up with cerebral palsy, school inclusion / mainstreaming, service dogs, the psychology of disability, traveling with a disability, and disability in movies, TV, and media. I'd love to speak to your group about any of these topics and more!
I travel around the USA with my service dog Aria by my side, visiting all kinds of amazing places and sharing my experiences. I post hotel, restaurant, and attraction reviews to help fellow travelers with and without disabilities. I offer practical advice, ideas, and support for every stage of the travel process, including planning a trip, choosing a destination, booking an accessible hotel room, and finding great attractions that interest you. I also write about accessibility, life with a disability, and current events from a disability perspective.
Join Me on the Journey!
My goal is to inspire others to never give up on their dreams. No matter what you’ve been through, you CAN still get out there and enjoy life. I’m living proof. I’ve had to overcome many challenges, but nothing heals the soul like traveling. Whether I’m exploring a big city, finding solace in nature, or just sharing my day-to-day experiences, I hope you’ll join me on the journey.
